Introduction to Photoshop - Adding Text

Adding Text

To add text to a piece of work, I located the horizontal text tool on the tool bar on the left hand side of the page. To start with, I clicked on the page once I had the tool selected and started typing. I just typed a basic title, iMedia, and placed it at the top of my page using the move tool. I also changed the size just to make it look a bit more like a title. The option to change the size and font are at the top of the page just below the task bar.

Also, it is possible to add text boxes and columns where necessary. I just used the same horizontal type tool as before, but instead of clicking the layer and typing, I held down the left mouse key and drew a box to type in. Using a column to type in is necessary for things like making magazine pages or covers. I just wrote something simple in the column to demonstrate what it looks like if I were to properly use one. I also adjusted the paragraph settings to make the line lengths the same.

Adding to this, if I were to write a column for a magazine article, I would need to make sure the paragraph settings, leading and tracking are all appropriate to make my work more legible. To do this, I just use a tool on the right hand side of the program and use the sliders to adjust the leading and tracking. I can also adjust the kerning between pairs of letters if necessary, as making all the line lengths the same can make words more drawn out and spread across the page.

In this image, I have written a simple statement to practice adjusting the leading. When written normally, the part of the statement that says "I am a" would be shorter than the word " feminist" beneath it. To make the words look more neat and pleasing to the eye, I adjusted the leading on the top line to match the bottom line. As you can see, this looks much better.

In this screenshot, I am practising adding emphasis to my text. To do this, I changed the colour of the word "am" from black to pink. This creates the effect of drawing the reader's attention to that word and making it the most prominent word in the sentence.

In this image, I have added a stroke to my text as a border. I did this by highlighting my text, selecting the option 'Edit' at the top of the page and selecting 'Stroke'. The size setting was 1, so I changed this to 20 to make it thicker and changed the colour from black to pink. This has the effect of making a sentence or title pop out more and grab a person's attention, while having a nice decorative effective.
