Becoming a Photographer

Becoming a Photographer

What will the job involve?

Photography involves being artistic with cameras and doing work that inspires people, and caters to their needs. There are several different kinds of photographers who specialise in different areas, such as wedding photographers and fashion photographers. Photographers tend to have to work freelance for a while before they can establish their own business, and will have to do commissions and work for free in order to gain popularity amongst clients and a good reputation. It is much easier to kickstart a good career in photography if you already have several people who know you, trust you and love your work.

What requirements are needed?

While some photographers are self employed (meaning there aren't any qualifications that they specifically need to have), some are employed by a company. If this is the case, then usually a Diploma in Photography or media of some kind will be needed. One of these can be gained through a two year course at a college, or a longer course a university. They will also need to know their way around the newest cameras, own up to date equipment and have knowledge on how to shoot and edit excellent photos.

How much is the salary?

The average Photographer in the UK will earn just under £21,000 a year. For hobbyists or amateur photographers, this is usually around £14,000 as they have to charge less than someone with a bit more experience. Of course, there are people that gain lots of experience and manage to work their way up in the industry, earning £34,000 a year. Also, there is the possibility that a career in photography could lead to a person being noticed and hired by a high end company and going on to earn hundreds of thousands of pounds.

What are the pros and cons?

One of the biggest negatives about having a career in photography is that there is no guaranteed fixed income. One week a person may have several clients, and then none the next. The industry booms and dips, and there is a lot of competition to try and beat. Some regular clients may find a cheaper photographer and decide to try their services instead. Also, the hours can be very long; up to 80 hours a week. This is usually to squeeze in as many clients at one time and get the best profit, which will be needed as equipment is expensive.
However, there are several positives to this career. For a start, you are your own boss, so you work on your terms and all the profits go towards you. This is also a luxury for introverted photographers, as they are not surrounded by co - workers all day. Also, the job is extremely rewarding as you get to work with your clients to get photos that look amazing and make them happy.

What are the skills needed?

Some of the basic skills needed to become a photographer are a basic knowledge on how to use a DSLR camera and photo editing software. Plus, a person will need to be friendly and approachable to gain the trust of their clients.

How suitable am I for this job?

I believe I am very suitable for a job in photography. For a start, I have always had a passion for photography, and I constantly take photos. I feel that I am friendly and approachable, so I could become well liked by clients and be friendly towards people. After I have completed my two year iMedia course, I will have most of the skills needed to become a photographer if I so wish.
