The Perfect Purple Smoky Eye Look

Got a big night out planned? How about a birthday celebration or graduation party? Unsure on what kind of look to wear? Well, ponder no further, because I'm about to give you a quick and easy tutorial on how to get the perfect smoky evening look using purple eyeshadow tones.

First thing's first, you need a good base for your eye look. A lot of people make the mistake of doing their eye makeup before any other makeup, which actually is less efficient. The reason for this is that foundation is an excellent base for eyeshadow, and it is way too easy to mess up eyeshadow by trying to apply foundation around it. Therefore, it is always best to apply your eyeshadow after you have your basic makeup look finished. As you can see in this image, I have applied my foundation, eyebrows and some light contour. This is the ideal time for you to start applying your eye makeup.

To begin with, it's important to use lighter colours and build up a darker shade gradually. If you go straight in with a dark shade, you will get more of a flat look rather than a nice, layered, graduated look: which can make your eyes look smaller. Take a fluffy blending brush and the lightest shade of purple that you own, and lightly blend it in across the top of your eyelids.

After adding a light colour for the base, take the same fluffy blending brush you just used and add a slightly darker purple tone to the look. To create a graduated colour effect, focus more on the outer corner of your eye, and blend the darker colour inwards so that the outer part of your eye remains the darkest part.

Now that you have a good colour gradient built up, you can go in with your darkest shade of purple. Only use a small amount of product, as it can be easy to ruin the gradient by adding too much of a dark colour and being unable to properly blend it all out.

The last dark colour you need to add to this smoky look is, of course, black. Take a tiny amount of black pigment on your fluffy eyeshadow blush, and blend it inwards from the corner of your eye. This completes the bulk of the look, and you're now ready to add more intricate detail to take you look those little steps further.

The next step you need to take will require a small, flat, angled makeup brush and a concealer of your choosing. You will need to dip your brush into the concealer, being careful not to overload it with too much product, and draw a cut crease shape over half of your eyelid rather than going all the way past the corner into a full cut crease.
Tip: if  you do end up applying too much concealer and are afraid of it not setting properly, take a small beauty blender and dab the area lightly. It'll soak up some of the product and make it appear smoother.

After this, take a clean, small makeup brush. It's important to be sure that the brush is clean, as you need to use it to apply white eyeshadow. Get some on your brush, and then lightly dab it on the area where you applied your concealer. This creates a nice half cut crease look, and sets the concealer. Also, make sure you go back in with your blending brush and make sure the end of your cut crease blends in with the darker part of your eyeshadow by lightly blending the ends together.

As the last step involving eyeshadow, take all the purple shades you previously used on your top eyelid and blend them in on your lower lid, just beneath your lash line. It doesn't necessarily matter at this stage whether or not you choose to create a colour gradient, as there is less space on your lower lash line to be able to create that much detail. You then need to take a black kohl eyeliner pencil, and use it to line your top and bottom waterline. This adds more of an edge to the look.

Next, take a black liquid eyeliner and use it to draw one straight, thin line close to your top lash line. If you don't own liquid liner, you can use pomade or a pencil, or skip this step if you prefer this look without any liner. At this stage, if you prefer a winged eyeliner look, now is the time for you to add that in.

At this stage, take your favourite highlighter and highlighter brushes. Spray your brushes with a setting spray, and apply your highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes, under your brows, on your cheekbones, on the tip of your nose, on the bridge of your nose and your cupid's bow.

Finally, the last step is for you to apply your mascara. You can use any mascara you like, but I prefer to use a lengthening mascara that involves the use of fibres. Also, if you prefer to use false lashes, this is the perfect time to apply those, but I personally will not be demonstrating how to apply them as I prefer to only wear mascara.

So this was my final look! As you can see I chose to match my eye look with this purple matte lipstick, but this look can be worn on its own or with any other lipstick or gloss of your choosing. This look is perfect for a party or night out on the town, and can be re created and customised in many ways by adding a touch of glitter or winged eyeliner.
